THE BIBLE AND OBJECTS OF RELIGIOUS WORSHIP
Devotional Text: Deut. 4:15-20

Introduction:
By “object of religious worship” attention is drawn to those religious graven images that depict certain concepts, deities, saints or personalities in certain religions of the world. These, the Bible strictly forbids in religious worship and practices, when it says, “take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spoke unto you in Horeb out of the midst of fire. Lest ye corrupt yourselves and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female. The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flies in the air. The likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth. And less thou lift up your eyes  unto heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon, and the stars, even all the hosts of heaven, and be driven to worship and serve them”…(Deut. 4:15-19).

GENERAL REMARKS

(1)       The cited Scripture reveals that God Has not revealed the similitude of His person at any time, (vs. 15-19)
(2)       The Scripture, also reveals that all religious symbols in the similitude of anything are not ordained by God, (vs. 15-19)
(3)       The scriptural implication of all forms of religious symbols in use today,  therefore, is that they represent strange
gods and not the Lord of Heaven and earth, (vs. 15-19)
(4)       The Scripture in focus equally shows that the photograph of the figure of the glorified state of Jesus which some religious groups present to the world today is false, since no camera or any other human equipment can take the photograph
of Jesus in His glorified state, (vas. 15-19)
OBJECTS OF RELIGIOUS WORSHIP IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
From the Old Testament era, the Bible shows that God forbids the worship of graven images, as cited in the main text of the lesson. Here, God reveals His desire to be worshipped in spirit and in truth, which Jesus cites in the Gospel of John, (4:24). For, when God is worshipped in spirit and in truth, no religious images or symbols are required, as what is needed in this context of worship is the spirit of the worshipper connecting the Spirit of God in worship (vs. 24), and not just any kind of fruitless attempt to establish religious contact  with God through any form of religious objects or symbol like; medals, beads, apron, bangles and a host of others, which amount to idol worship, considering the Word of God, as cited in Deuteronomy 4:15-20. This reveals that in the Old Testament;
(i)                    No religious objects of any shape were required for worship (vs. 15-20)
(ii)                  Any religious objects in the similitude of man or woman, animal or bird, star, moon
 and sun were regarded as idols (vs.15-20)
(iii)                 God was worshipped in spirit and in truth, as Jesus later cited in the New Testament (John 4:24)
OBJECTS OF RELIGIOUS WORSHIP IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
                        As cited in the previous section of this lesson, Jesus reveals that, “God is spirit and those who worship Him must do so in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24), and in turn says, He is the way, the truth and life, and that no one comes to the Father but by Him” (John 14:16), which accordingly removes all forms of religious symbolism or images in the worship of God, (Deut. 4:15-20_. For His Name shall be called Emmanuel, which by interpretation means, God is with us, (Matt. 1:23). Therefore, now that the Lord God Has revealed Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ, it becomes evident that no other intermediary is required between God and man, except the Lord Jesus Himself, (1 Tim.2:5). This makes it clearer that;
(i)                    God does not require any other religious object in worship except Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, (Deut. 4:15-20)
(ii)                  Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and Life, and no one comes to the Father, but by Him, (John 14:6).
(iii)                 There is no other mediator between God and man, except our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, (1 Tim. 2:5)
OBJECTS OF RELIGIOUS WORSHIP AND THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Before the crucifixion and ascension of Jesus Christ, He promised another Comforter, who would lead the Christian-church, in the person of the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16;26;15:26). In furtherance, Jesus remarks, …”I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you, but if I depart, I will send Him unto you” (John 16:7). This promise was officially fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost, (Acts 2:1-4). What a glorious handover of the Christian Church into Able Hands of the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity! For, there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word(Jesus) and the Spirit,  and these three are one, (1 John 5:7) Having stressed the above, now observe the n the Old Testament, every object of religious worship was forbidden (Deut. 16:15-20) , in the New Testament, Jesus became reveals as the  Express Image of His Person (Heb. 1:3) and in the Christian Church era, the Holy Spirit is the leader, (Acts. 10:19). So, in the Christian Church, also;
(i)                    Religious objects of worship like, medal, bead, bangle, images of Mary, Joseph or any other saint or figure (Deut 4:15-20) are, as well forbidden, as the Holy Spirit now leads, (Acts 10:19)
(ii)                  Only Jesus remains the figure of worship, and the way to the Father (John 14:6), as the Holy Spirit testifies of Him, (John 15:26)
(iii)                 Worship and contact with the Spirit of God should be by the spirit (John 4:24) and not by any religious objects like; medal, bangle, bead, etc. (Deut. 4:15-20)
In conclusion, let it be summarized that in the Old Testament, all forms of religious images are forbidden in worship (Deut. 4:15-20), and tagged idols. In the New Testament, Jesus became manifested as the only Figure of acceptable worship before God, the Father (John 14:6), while in the Christian Church era, the Holy Spirit becomes the center of adoration and worship to God, the Father, Son and Himself, (the Holy Spirit), being one, (1 John 5: 7), foreclosing the use of religious images in worship.  BEWARE OF IDOL WORSHIP!

  THE BIBLE AND TATTOO MARKS
Devotional Text: Lev. 19:28

Introduction:
The first part of the main Scripture text of this lesson points to the ban on cutting marks on one’s body for the dead, (vs. 28A), whereas  the second part places inhibition on tattoo marks (vs. 28B).  According to Matthew Henry, the rites and ceremonies of cutting one’s flesh for the dead, by which the heathens expressed their sorrow at funerals must not be practiced or imitated, in line with the Law of Moses. They must not make cuts or points in their flesh for the dead, for the heathen do so to pacify the infernal deities they dream of, and by so doing, render their propitious to their dead friends. John Wycliffe also notes that the prohibition of any voluntary disfigurement of the person was in place, since both cutting and tattooing of the body were practices by the heathen.
GENERAL REMARKS
(1)     Cutting of marks on one’s body for the dead is idol worship that must be avoided, (Levi. 19:28)
(2)     Tattoo marks show the identity of the devil and not Christ, (vs. 28)
(3)     The cutting of marks on one’s body for the dead is  heathenish way to grieve for the dead (vs. 28)
(4)     Tattoo marks are demonically inspired marks to show who belong to them, (vs. 28)
TATTOO AS MARK OF IDOL
In the words of Adam Clarke, “it was a very ancient and general custom to carry tattoo marks on the body in honour of the objects of their worship”. In this connection, Clarkes, as well notes that there were several cases where persons have tattoos of the figures of the cross, the Virgin Mary  and more, made on their arms, breasts and other parts of the body, in which the skin was being first punctured, and then a blue colouring matter rubbed in, which is never afterward effaced. All these were done for superstitious purposes and to such things probably the prohibition in the verse as cited. The above citation definitely shows that tattoo marks are the symbols or identities of the strange gods or idols which people worship or identify with. Thus, the Holy Scripture says:
(i)                   You shall not print any marks on your body for the dead, (Lev. 19:28)
(ii)                 You should not make a graven image, in the similitude of any figure of a god to you,
let alone making tattoo of them, (Deut. 4:15-20)
(iii)                Any image in the similitude of any figure including that of  Virgin Mary, Jesus, the cross, or any other saint or religious leader are not to be reverend or worshiped or their tattoo ,marks carried on the body, (vs. 15-20).
TATTOO MARKS AND CASTE (SYSTEM)
Adam Clarke further notes that, “all the castes of the Hindus bear on their forehead or elsewhere what are called the sectarian marks, which distinguish them, not only in a civil, but, from each other”. The foregoing cites another evil of tattoo marks, as it shows that the marks are used sometimes to identify those marked as slaves in certain caste systems of the world. But, in Christ, all mankind are His creatures, all conditions are deposed and regulated by His providence, and all human beings are equally purchased by His Blood. Thus, in Christ Jesus, there is no caste distinction to warrant tattoo marks, (Col. 3:10-11). By this, therefore, please note that;
(i)                   One of the reasons for banning tattoo marks in the Law of Moses is that the heathens
 sometimes used the marks to discriminate against those they refer to as outcasts,(Lev. 19:28)
(ii)                 The Lord hates printing tattoo marks on the bodies of  individuals
as a way of  showing they are outcasts, (vs. 28)
(iii)                Now, by the redemptive work of Christ Jesus, one who believes in Him
 is not an outcast or slave, (Col. 3:10-11)
TATTOO MARKS AND THE MARKS OF CHRIST
Now, that it has become obvious that tattoo marks are heathenish, as well as the identity that distinguish members of certain caste system and strange gods, it therefore, becomes expedient for the Christian faithful to look forward to marks of identity of his faith. To this end, the Apostle Paul says… henceforth, let no man trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus”, (Gal.6:17). Here, the Apostle probably speaks of the many scars of the wounds he had received in the work of the ministry of the Lord and other dehumanizing problems that come as a result of his faith, which had remained indelible, in both his physical and psychological life as tattoo marks, and not just any sectarian marks. In this connection, the truth remains that;
(i)             The Marks of Christ in the life of a Christian are not sectarian tattoo marks, but the physical and psychological marks which come as a result of temptations and trials of one’s faith, (Gal.6:17)
(ii)           The Christian should endeavour to endure till the end, so as to be saved, (Matt. 10:22)
(iii)          …if he draws back, the Lord will not have pleasure in him, (Heb. 10:38)
In conclusion, let it be sounded loud and clear that tattoo marks are evil marks initiated by the kingdom of darkness to strike identity for the various demons in their networks, and accordingly, the Word of God say no to such marks, as well as the cutting of the body for the dead, as a way of mourning. This, therefore, should be rejected and denounced by every Christian who truly desires to be with the Lord in His kingdom, hereafter. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NOTHING WITH THE DEVIL!

THE BIBLE AND FORNICATION
Devotional Text: 1 Cor. 6:15-20

Introduction:
The EN English Dictionary defines “fornication” as that “sexual intercourse, especially on the part of the unmarried persons”. In the words of Apostle Paul, the sin of fornication is both against God and the one who is guilty of the act, (1 Cor. 6:18). However, the act of the sexual intercourse between a man and a woman which are not married does not by Law amount to adultery, since adultery refers to the sexual sin between a married and a single, or married and another married individual. But, whichever way one looks at fornication, it is a sin against God, against self and a despicable immoral behaviour, punishable in the life and in the life to come, (1 Cor. 6:9-10).

GENERAL REMARKS

(1)     Fornication makes one’s body one with the body of a harlot, (1 Cor. 6:15-16)
(2)     Fornication detaches one from the Spirit of the Lord, (vs. 16-17)
(3)     Fornication is a sin against self, (vs. 18)
(4)     Fornication defiles one as God’s temple, bought with a price, (vs. 19-20)
FORNICATION AND THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE BODY OF CHRIST
                        Fornication dismembers one from the Body of Christ, which is the Church. However, this dismembership is not physical, but spiritual. This means that someone could be a member of a church denomination, yet not a member of the body of Christ or the Church. In the words of the Apostle Paul…”he who is joined to a harlot is one spirit”, (1 Cor. 6:15-17). So, one who engages in fornication automatically connects oneself to the Queen of Harlot, that is, Lucifer, and this, in turn removes one from the realm of the Lord, (vs. 15-17). This is the tragedy of fornication, and the obvious implication is that it pushes one into spiritual darkness and death. To this end, therefore, let it be stated that the sin of fornication;
(i)                   Disconnects one from the Lord, while one remains a member of a church denomination, (vs. 15-17)
(ii)                 Links up one with Lucifer, the Queen of Harlot, and so makes one member of the immoral
body of Satan, (vs. 15-17)
(iii)                Makes one, one body with the Mother of Harlots and not one body with Christ, (vs. 15-17)
FORNICATION AND THE DEFILEMENT OF THE TEMPLE OF GOD
The Scripture...”know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God and ye are not your own”… (1 Cor. 6:19) talks of the presence of the Spirit of God in the believer, which any careless act of fornication can let go. And, it is certain, when the Spirit of God vacates one’s life, darkness and death set in. In other words, one becomes a dead log when the Spirit of God leaves one. Though, such a person can still sing, pray, at times fast or engage in other religious activities, but one under such a spiritual condition remains spiritually bankrupt and useless in the order of the kingdom of Heaven. This is one of the great evils that fornication can bring to one’s life. Thus, the Apostle states, “flee fornication: for every sin that a man does, is without the body, but he that commits fornication sins against himself”, (1Cor. 6:18). In this connection, the believer should;
(i)                   Make no room for fornication in his life, since he is the temple of the Holy Ghost, (vs. 19)
(ii)                 Know that he is bought with a price, and so, should glorify God in his body and spirit,
which are God’s (vs. 19)
(iii)                Be aware that the Holy Ghost leaves one’s life, when one fails to let fornication flee, (vs.18-19)
FORNICATION AND FINAL JUDGMENT
Fornication definitely leads to final judgment, since it bars one out of the Kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9-10), and when one is barred out of the Kingdom of God, one therefore, faces the White Throne Judgment (Rev. 20:11-15), where one must give account of everything written against one in God’s book of record (vs. 12), and finally be rewarded with eternal death, (vs. 13-14). But, blessed are those who keep His Words, and surely they will have access to the City of God, (Rev. 22:14). Note, also, that fornication is one of the works of the flesh that God will not be tolerate in His kingdom (Gal. 5:19-21),, and one of the sins that would keep people, who the Bible describes as dogs,, outside the gates of Heaven, (Rev. 22:15). And, the foregoing, points to eternal punishment, which cannot be remedied, if one refuses to repent in one’s life time on earth, (vs. 15). Having cited the above, please note that fornication;
(i)                   Is one of the sins that can stop one from getting into the Kingdom of God, (1 Cor. 6:9-10)
(ii)                 Is one of the works of the flesh that must be let go, if one desires to find a place
 in the Kingdom of God, hereafter, (Gal. 5:19-21)
(iii)                Is one of the immoral acts that tag one “ a dog” outside the gates of Heaven, (Rev. 22:15).
In conclusion, “flee fornication: Every sin that one commits, is without the body: but one that commits fornication sins against one’s own body” (1 Cor. 6:18), as well as bars oneself out of the Kingdom of God, (1 Cor. 6:9-10). BE INFORMED!

Transvestism as an Abomination before God

Devotional Text: Deu.22:5
Introduction:
Transvestism simply means “dressing in the clothing of the opposite sex”, and this, the Bible says is detestable to God, (Deut. 22:5). The Scripture clearly shows that the primary aim for clothing is to cover one’s nakedness (Gen. 3:7), and not the unnecessary drawing of attention to oneself, which every transvestite seeks to achieve. Also, before now, transvestism was a ploy to deceive. For instance, Adam Clarks in his Bible Commentary remarks that Clodius, who dressed himself like a woman that he might mingle with the Roman ladies in the feast of the Bona Dea, was universally execrated. This, therefore, readily suggests one reason why transvestism is an abomination before God.
GENERAL REMARKS

(1)       Transvestism is a mark of rebellion against God’s Word, (Deut. 22:5)
(2)       Transvestism is a manifestation of one’s sinful nature, (vs. 5)
(3)       Transvestism is an ungodly way of dressing, (vs. 5)
(4)       Transvestism makes one an abomination before God (vs. 5)
TRANSVESTISM AS AN OPEN REBELLION AGAINST GOD
                        Those who engage in transvestism are in open rebellion against the Lord. This is because, the Law of Moses banning tranvestism (Deut. 22:5) is both moral and universal law, since it is from the God of the whole universe. And, for the people who hold that the Law was only for the Old Testament believers, let it be stressed here that every moral law in the Scripture extends to people of all generations and dispensations. So, those who disobey the Law of Moses, banning transvestism (vs. 5) are like saying to God, we;
(i)                    know your law banning transvestism, (Deut. 22:5)
(ii)                  equally know that transvestism is an abomination before you, (vs. 5)
(iii)                 will not change, but will always show our rebellion openly, (vs. 5)
But, these individuals should better know that nothing abominable will enter the Kingdom of God, (Rev. 21:8).
TRANSVESTISM AND THE MODERN WORLD
transvestism in the modern world is  often seen as a mark of civilization. But, the biblical truth remains that transvestion is a manifestation of the sinful and rebellious nature of man against God, (Deut. 22:5). The modern world, also gives other reasons to justify transvestism. Some say their profession demands it. Others say certain climatic problems may justify it. But, all these are smacks of hypocrisy, since humanity is capable of making different attires that are suitable for both sexes in every climate and profession. In the light of the above, let it be sounded that God’s Word to the primitive age is the same to the modern age, and so, no excuses for rebellion. Therefore, to the modern world, the Holy Scripture also says;
(i)              transvestism remains an abomination before God, (Deut. 22:5)
(ii)            man’s sinful nature craves for worldly desires, which transvestism is definitely one, (Eph. 2:1-3)
(iii)           that repentance is necessary for total cleansing, (Acts 3:19)
Furthermore, the modern world should equally know that transvestism (Deut. 22:5) is one of the abominations that send people to hell, (Rev. 21:8)
TRANSVESTISM AND CHRISTIAN CHURCH
According to the Bible, the Christian church is the congregation of those called to be saints (Rom. 1:7), and saints are holy people (1 Cor. 1:2), who should maintain the purity of heart and mind (Matt. 5:8), as well as totally be separated from the world, (1 John 2:15-17). If the foregoing is anything to go by, why resemble the world if one is a Christian? Why dress in the pattern of the world if one believes that one is a child of God? If transvestism (Deut. 22:5) according to the Holy Scripture is an abomination before God, why should one who calls oneself a child of God crave for it? To those who claim that the ban on transvestism (vs. 5) remains an Old Testament issue, has God changed (Mal. 3:5) in character or essence? Did He ban immorality in the Old Testament and legalize it in the New? Let no one deceive you, transvestism remains a moral problem and simply a mark of the sinful or depraved nature in the unredeemed man and not an identity of civilization or Christian way of dressing. To this end, therefore, the Christian should not allow anyone, in whatever guise, to lure him into transvestism, which is;
(i)                    an abomination before God (Deut. 22:5)
(ii)                  an identity of the pride of this world, (1 John 2:15-17), and
(iii)                 one of the cravings of the sinful nature, (Eph. 2:3)
In conclusion, please note that transvestism is a moral problem which manifests itself in cross-dressing, and remains an open rebellion against God. And so, anyone, church or society that condones it, is in the verge of Divine Judgment. BE WARNED!

THE BIBLE AND DRESS CODE (PART 2)
Indecent Dressing as a Mark of Prostitution

Devotional Text: Prov. 7:10-23

Introduction:
The heart of every true believer truly seeks to please the Lord in every aspect of his life, and this, includes his dress code. To this end, the cited believer ensures that his lifestyle and mode of dressing are always to the glory of God. According to Ben Onyeukwu (2004), the primary objective in dressing is the covering of nakedness. Other objectives as necessitated by climatic and environmental problem include; the giving of warmth to our bodies and the protecting of the skin from insect bite”. Socially speaking, Ben Onyeukwu continues, “man also should dress to look nice”, but there is no biblical support for indecent dressing which has become a common feature in both church and society of today.

GENERAL REMARKS
(1)     Indecent dressing is indeed, a mark of prostitution, (Pro. 7:10)
(2)     Indecent dressing goes with crafty intent, (vs. 10)
(3)     Indecent dressing is equally a sign of defiant spirit at work, (vs. 11)
(4)     Indecent dressing also stimulates wandering behaviour (vs. 11-12)
INDECENT DRESSING AND SPIRITUALITY
No doubt, indecent dressing does not connote spirituality. One who dresses indecently and still claims to be spiritual is, indeed in falsehood. Indecent dressing depicts sodomy, and sodomy, according to the EN English Dictionary, simply means “any of several forms of sexual intercourse held to be unnatural, particularly bestiality or homosexuality, but also sometimes, anal or oral sex”. In fact, one’s dress code is a window by which one’s spiritual life could be mirrored.  For, it is not often possible for one who dresses like a prostitute to be a saint inside. Indecent dressing smacks the lust of the flesh (Gal. 5:16), and on this note, the Scripture says
(i)                   Walk in the spirit, that you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh, (vs. 10)
(ii)                 “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes”…
“is not of the Father, but of the world”, (1 John 2:16)
(iii)               “And the world passes away and the lust therefore, but he that does
the will of God abides forever”, (vs. 17)
INDECENT DRESSING AND THE GLORY OF GOD
The way we eat, speak or even dress should give God glory, if we really acknowledge Him as our Master and Saviour. In this connection, the Apostle Paul says…”whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God”, (1 Cor. 10:31). In the words of Ben Onyeukwu (2004), Christian attire must be designed to give God glory. Though, he did not specify any particular fashion, but stresses that Christian should always consider what promotes the glory of God as they make their attires. And, to be blunt here, no indecent dress code gives God glory. Indecent dressing is a mindless exhibitionism, which means, “the practice or character trait of deliberately drawing attention to oneself” and, without mincing words, such a tendency can never be to the glory of God. Based on the foregoing, therefore, the believer should ensure that;:
(i)                   What he wears to church services is not in the category of what the Bible
 refers to as the attire of the harlot, (Pro. 7:10)
(ii)                 His garment for social activities (if different from what he wears to church)
 should distinguish him as a child of God and not a harlot, (vs. 10)
(iii)                The attires he wears at home do not depict him as something different
from what people know about him in church and social services, (vs. 10)
INDECENT DRESSING AND CHRISTIAN IDENTITY
                        This section of the lesson is designed to specify the character trait of the Christian, and not just the successfully socialized into what may be termed the excellent dress code of the Christian faith, but remains porous in terms of the inward beauty of the believer, (2 Tim. 3:5). On this note, the Apostle Peter, in a message to the women says, “while people behold your chaste conversation, coupled with fear, let not your adorning be the outward adorning of plaiting the hair and wearing of gold or of putting on of apparel. But of the hidden man of the heart”… (1 Peter 3:2-4). Peter’s address indicates that it is possible for someone to religiously relinquish indecent dressing, plait hair in Christian manner, wear gold like Christians, as well as maintain other forms of Christian dress code, and yet, without Christian virtues. (2 Tim 3:5).  In line with this, let it be stressed that the Christian identity can only be said to have been achieved when:
(i)                   Decent dress code and inner Christian virtue replace indecent dressing and
 ungodly behavior, (1 Peter2: 2-4)
(ii)                 Indecent dressing is relinquished with a firm decision to adopt and maintain
Christian dress code and lifestyle, (vs.2-4)
(iii)                Hypocrisy in dress code is no longer prevalent in the life of the Christian, whether
 at home or abroad or in secret or open place, (vs. 2-4).
In conclusion, let it be summarized that indecent dressing has been a big  problem in both church and society of today, but the Christian is expected to live above board,  and accordingly shine as light, as a way of giving God glory, (Matt. 5:16). And, to drop indecent dressing without a consideration for Christian virtue is meaningless. PLEASE MAKE UP YOUR MIND!
