Devotional Text: James 3:1-13

Introduction:
The Bible depicts a perfect man as one who does not offend in words. It also indicates that such a man has control of his body system. Understandably true, every good gift can easily be misapplied. So, the tongue, being one of God’s precious gifts can be misapplied if adequate care is not taken.
GENERAL REMARKS
(1)  The tongue is not for offences. (verse 2) – Ref. (II Cor. 6:3)
(2)  The tongue should be controlled. (verses 3 – 4) – Ref. (Col. 4:6).
(3)  The tongue is not for empty boasts (verses 5) – Ref. (Prov. 27:1-2)
(1)  The tongue is often influenced by the forces of hell, (verses 6).
THE NEGATIVE USE OF TONGUE
In most cases, people are brought into the positive way of doing things by simply exposing the negative to them. In the light of the foregoing, the writer deems it a step in the right direction to expose the negative use of the tongue before the positive use of it. Therefore, the tongue should not be used for;
(1)  negative gossips, (I Tim. 5:12-13)
(2)  tale Bearing, (Prov. 26:20).
(3)  evil Speaking, (James 4:11-12).
(4)  lying, (Prov. 12:19).
(5)  idle words, (Matt. 12:36-27).
THE POSITIVE USE OF TONGUE
Biblically speaking, one should learn how to use one’s tongue well. This means that one’s tongue should always;
(1)  speak God’s righteousness and Praise, (Ps. 35:28).
(2)  bless and not curse (Rom. 12:14).
(3)  speak God’s word (Ps. 119:172), etc.
The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, (Prov. 15:2). CORRECT YOURSELF TODAY.
